After upgrading to NC 32 I get an error “AppAPI default deploy daemon is not set”.
Does this have anything to do with this feature request? How can I solve this?

AFAIK the error is harmless, unless you want to install external apps, which wouldn't work.

Any way to install external apps without a reverse proxy until the issue is fixed?

i was able to fix it with adding the appapi-harp container to the compose file e.g:

appapi-harp:
      container_name: appapi_harp
      image: ghcr.io/nextcloud/nextcloud-appapi-harp
      networks:
        - nextcloud_db
      environment: 
        HP_SHARED_KEY: "Your_Secret_Here"
        NC_INSTANCE_URL: "Your_Nextcloud_URL"
      volumes:
        - /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock
        - /path/to/nextcloud/config/keys:/certs
